A Smokey Weekend

Despite an inexhaustible series of work and car related, stress-inducing moments the last several weeks that have left me...well...exhausted, I manned-up this weekend and connected with the caveman in me. In charge of providing the meat at our Church picnic, I arranged for several of the men to get up early and help barbecue. It really was the perfect man morning.

We started at 5AM, with just two of us, and ended up with 5 of us and nearly 100 pounds of chicken, beef and pork. The hickory smoke that curls above the grills, sunrise over the trees, and 40 hot air balloons floating by. A rainbow barely carved through the tree line and landed right in front of us. Within 10 minutes they had it packed up and all the onlookers drove off. We sat around chatting and joking, adding more chips to the grill, and throwing the football. Breakfast was even grilled up for us; egg, cheese and ham sandwiches. A polygamist band of deer and wild turkeys popped in to say high. And yes...we considered adding both to our menu of smoked meats.

It was nice to have a classic manly morning. You can't beat such a return to classic manly values. And by the way, it was tasty!
